Well here are my two first attempts. One is for a friend of mine.
We ran them on Sunday and what a gass.
They are such fun but do need a bit of mods.
My friends will be going up from a 35 to a 40 and mine i am trying a 9x6 prop on a ASP 25. Will see how it performs.
Guys please let me know if you thunk the rudders are too big or not.

They both look good. Nice paint job. As for rudder size, they looked a bit tall but if they run well then don't change anything. _________________ IF YOU AIN'T FLIPPING YOU AIN'T PUSHING HARD!!! |

I agree. You have two nice boats there. I'm a big fan of (THE DOCTOR) and never miss a race. _________________

The paint is normal enamel then the stickers then Glatex8.
My friend is the Doctor fan.
I have noticed that the rudders on the normal airboats are using rudders that are half the lenght of the prop.Would this work on our RC ones?
I am thinking of changing them and trying that out with the next one that will be running a 61. |

To me thats the fun part. You can call it Playing or Modding your boat. I say try out different ideas to see what works best for YOU. What work for me might not work well with you. So have fun and keep us posted. _________________

Very nice looking boats!
Like the others said, if it works for you...
Personally I prefer taller rudders. I've tried various air rudder setups and have ended up back with tall rudders every time, but that's me. Other folks prefer short rudders. Some folks like dual rudders, others like singles. Just play with it and see what you like best.
Whatever you changes you make, keep us posted of the results, good or bad.
And vids are always welcome! _________________ Russell |

Hi Guys,
Just to let you all know I am busy drawing up some plans for a 61 with a 12x8 prop on it.
The motor came off a plane and is an ASP.
It will have a lowered deck and the sides are straight down to the front at 45 degree angle. It will have the extra piece on the front like the others.
Will post some pictures as I progress and also let you know how it runs.
Cannot wait for this one, but could take a while.
Any suggestions as to the thickness of ply to use? I have some that is about 4.5mm thick and will be using this. Should be OK?

The 4.5 ply would be good for the framing.
For the cover sheeting see if you can get some 1.5 ply or some Luan ply that ply is around 3mm thick. _________________ IF YOU AIN'T FLIPPING YOU AIN'T PUSHING HARD!!! |

Yep! 3mm ply or thinner . I find that the thinner ply keeps the weight of the whole boat down and you don't loose to much strength. _________________ IF YOU AIN'T FLIPPING YOU AIN'T PUSHING HARD!!! |

Upgraded motor and rudders. I find the smaller rudders are better.
The reason being when i cut the last ones down it tended to drift better in a corner than jump.
Oh the new motor is actually from my friends boat. The 40 was to quick for him so i am trying it on mine but with a 9x6 prop and not a 10x6.
Will let you guys know how it went.

If you don't have a digital video camera it's a little harder. I bought a video converter that plugs into my computer. It has video and audio inputs that can be hooked up to a camera, VCR, DVD player or whatever and allows you to get video onto the computer for editing and upload.
If you need to justify the purchase, we used it do get all of our 8mm tapes onto DVD. _________________ Russell |

Hi Jasper,
Now that you mention it, I have a digital camera and i think it can take video. I will check it tonight maybe do a test and see what happens.
Thanks a stack for the input on my dilemma. _________________ If It Aint RC dont buy it. |

Hey RC Rules
If immitation is the biggest form of flattery, you are about to be flattered.
I have started a 3rd boat, but after my last design failed, I thought I would copy a proven design. ie . Yours.
With the steep sides they look like the would handle well.
Tell me, how well do your boats slide in the corners?
(Out of curiosity, where in SA do you live? I used to live in just outside of Durban, Natal)

Hi DownUnder,
I actually stay in Alberton JHB. The old Transvaal you know.
The best boat i have that slides in the corners and does what i want on grass and water is a 40 powered flatty..
I got the plans from the Cojangator site (not sure if it is spelt right)
The yellow one i changed the sides to 45 degrees all the way but does not slide well if at all.
I think perhaps the 60 motor is too heavy. Thus that boat has been shelved.
How long you been down under?? _________________ If It Aint RC dont buy it. |

Alberton? Is that what the Transvaal is called these days?
Left Durban in '94 and went to NZ. Lived there for 8 years before moving to Oz. Have been in Oz for about 8 years now.
Do you have any pic's of the 40 powered flatty that you can post, or is it one of the boats at the top?
Sorry to hear the big yellow boat has been shelved. Was hanging to see it in action. You should post some vids any way.... |

Hi DownUnder,
Sorry Alberton is an area in Transvaal. The Transvall is now called Gauteng. Where they got that name from dont know.
The 40 powered flatty is on this wedsite i think under projects. It has BadBoy on the front and is white. There are actually tow as i built one for a friend and his has the monster energy drink logo on. Dont know if i posted it.
I have tried to put vids on the site but have a problem downloading to potobucket first.
The yellow boat turns too tight and is difficult to get to slide but when you do it is OK.
If you have an e-mail address i can send some photo's that way. Let me know. _________________ If It Aint RC dont buy it. |
