I finally got to start on the 60 series kit I won last summer.
Thanks Jasper.

There are so many build threads on this style boat, I figured that I didn't need to post the assembly.
Right now it is all primed and wet sanded and ready for paint.

I have two base colors to choose from. A light metallic blue
Same color as this:

and two shades of darker green, this one being the lighter one:

I want flames in the design and I have 3 colors of red and one yellow to use for that.

The blue paint doesn't have a very good sheen when dry so I'm leaning toward the green but it might look stupid with flames.

and the inside of the radio box:

I'd go with the green base, and red flames tipped in yellow.

If you go with the green I would throw some flake in the clear when you lay it down and it will look awesome. What motor is planned for this boat?

Thanks for the ideas guys, There has been a change of plans. I took the boat to a local body shop / custom paint shop to get an estimate.

The base color will be a pewter and will have a shade lighter silver flames with blue highlights. I talked to the owner of the place and he has a young man in his employ that does all his custom work.

I first asked about "real flame" but that's a lengthy process that costs a bundle.

I saw some of his work and it's good..motorcycle tanks, custom paint on snowmobiles...he's pretty good so I told him the colors I wanted and pretty much gave him creative license on design. I can't wait to see it. LOL

I do, however, plan on painting the SI mini with the ideas you've all given. What would you all think of the light blue metallic as a base and larger 3 color flames tipped in yellow?

I bet that ghost flame in the pewters will look awesome! The only problem is you may not want to open that motor up to much in fear of scratching that beauty Laughing . Can't wait to see it.

crispy I am sure what you will get from the paint shop will awesome. the color scheme sounds great.

If you don't mind me asking what is the approx. price they quoted? Maybe I will go into the custom paint bus, or maybe not! I have done a few cars, a hundred years ago. But I guess I like just being retired. Wink Laughing
Besides we don't have any airboat guys around here. I hope to help that cause Very Happy

Bob,

Well..I did a little research before committing to a professional paint job.
Costs that I looked at were paint (three colors), reducer for the paint, thinner for clean up, clear coat and the catalyst (hardener) 1500 grit sandpaper and buffing compound for the clear coat, I was looking at over $200 just for supplies. I could spread that cost over many boats to reduce my cost, like you want to do, but it wasn't cost effective for one boat.

$100 for a professional custom paint job, base coat/clear coat is a good deal as far as I'm concerned.

One thing I did not know...I guess paint used on cars nowdays is some kind of water base?

Did your painter say he was using a water based base coat? Much of the stuff still available is not water based, and I can guarantee your clear coat will not be water based so no worries there.

Man that's really interesting. When I bought the yellow for mine, I bought it from one of our autobody paint suppliers. They didn't even mention water base. sounds like a heck of a green idea though.

I used acrylic enamel, with a reducer, and hardener.

But that [water base] is probably what everything is going to.
Darn Crying or Very sad I really liked the paint I used, because it sprayed so nice.
I didn't have any runs, and they said I really didn't need a clear coat.
The gloss is better than anything I have painted before, with lacquer, and put 5 or 6 coats of clear on, and then still had to rub it out with compound.

But he did say lacquer is just about a thing of the past.
It was not very durable, and would crack easily.

I imagine EPA is behind it and that is OK.
It would be nice to clean up my gun and tools with water.

I hope to hear more about it. Very Happy

Well good luck on whatever you do, and keep us posted.
bob Very Happy

The primer sealer is epoxy usually. That is going to be a pretty high tech paint job with the water based base coat. The clear should still be a catalyzed urethane unless he has another trick up his sleeve.

Definitely. They have to prep it a bit further than you already have, plus there is three stages to the system they are using. I would say it is going to take someone 2.5-4 hours to do it, and if it is being done in a real booth they will cook it under the lamps between stages. It should be able to take a pretty good beating too Wink .

Confused It turns out that during the final stage of the paint job, (the peeling of the tape) The tape lifted the base coat off the boat. Shocked apparently the young fellow did something wrong and the owner "had words" with the boy.

He didn't like being "yelled at" and gave his notice. I guess the boat had to be stripped and repainted. I will be getting a paint job, just no flames. Sad

Darn the tape!! Mad

That is the scariest part about painting sometimes. Oh well I am sure it will still look plenty hot without the flames.

Darn water base paint Twisted Evil This is interesting. Water based paint on a boat ??? Hmmm. sounds fishy....

I saw something "green" the other day that was new to me too. Soy based paint stripper. This stuff looked like Marvel Mystery Oil. The guy said it worked as good as that stinky gooey toxic stuff.

Whats next?? 1 part epoxy! 3 ply toilet paper! Terabyte usb thumb drives!

I have good news!

#1. The kid didn't quit his job, he and the boss worked it out.

#2. Got the boat today. Even though it doesn't have flames, it's still pretty cool!

Some pictures and a video...just for the fun of it.

Looks pretty awesome man. Cool There's nothing quite like a BC CC paint job. I say put some red pin striping on it and it can be a buccaneer boat .

I always put a teenie tiny scratch on mine right after they are finished so I can say I was the first one to scratch it.

here are the ready to run pictures.
